What should I wear/bring with me?
Your comfort is our primary concern and although we have the shelter of a cabin and are careful to plan your trip around the day’s weather forecast, conditions can change very quickly on the water so we recommend that everybody comes prepared with:
– flat and comfortable shoes with a firm grip
– comfortable clothing for climbing on and off the yacht to include a light sweater and a waterproof for protection from the elements
– a sunhat
– you might want to bring your camera or smart phone to capture the memories
Do I need to have sailing experience to charter the yacht?
Not at all. The Whitman Yacht is staffed with professional crew and we always advise on boating procedures to make sure you stay comfortable and safe – all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. However if you do wish to participate in the sailing experience, we can involve you as much or as little as you please.
Can you teach us to sail?
We are not a sailing instruction program but if you wish to experience operating the yacht with our experienced crew we can involve and guide you as much or little as you please. For example you can take control of the wheel to direct the yacht, help hoist the sails and crank on the winches. However your safety and comfort is our priority so our professional crew will maintain control and make judgements depending on your experience and competency levels and the day’s conditions.
How long in advance do I need to book my charter?
We recommend that you book as early as possible when you make your plans to visit coastal Georgia as availability is limited especially at weekends. However we sometimes have cancellations or last minute availability so it is always worth contacting us if you feel spontaneous and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Can we bring our children to enjoy the experience?
We welcome children aged five and over accompanied by responsible family members. By coastguard regulation, children under the age 13 are required to wear life jackets while on board.
Are pets welcome aboard?
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets as we must prioritize our guests’ comfort and safety.
Will I get seasick?
Everybody is different and if you do have a tendency to motion sickness you might wish to bring medication. However we prioritize our guests’ comfort and we plan your sailing experience to suit your tastes and comfort zone. The Whitman Yacht operates out of a calm harbor on the intracostal waterway and the Wilmington River and Wassaw Sound where we often take our guests offer calm protected sailing. If you would like to book a day of ocean sailing and do begin to feel unwell, these calm waters are never far away.
Can The Whitman Yacht be chartered overnight?
The Whitman yacht is bookable by the half day or day. If multiple consecutive days are required we can occasionally accommodate special requests for overnight guests.
What is your deposit and cancellation policy?
We require a 50% deposit (which is non-refundable within five days of the booking date) to secure your charter booking. We understand that plans change and booking dates can sometimes be altered subject to availability. If we need to cancel due to inclement weather and rescheduling is not possible your deposit will be returned in full.
What happens if we experience bad weather?
Changes in weather are as much a part of sailing as water and wind. We operate the yacht in a variety of weather conditions as long as we can be confident of a safe and pleasant experience for our guests but will always respect your wishes. If we need to cancel due to inclement weather and rescheduling is not possible your deposit will be returned in full.
What about refreshments?
We always have bottled water and a selection of drinks available to guests. Every charter experience is tailored so please let us know what you have in mind and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes – from light snacks to picnics, meals and more.
