LAUNCH OF THE WHITMAN YACHT FOR CHARTER AS WESTIN COLLABORATION ANNOUNCED

EMBARGOED – 6PM TUESDAY MARCH 31 2015

SAVANNAH, GA – This evening on The Savannah River, The Whitman Yacht made its official debut from the waterfront of The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa as a new collaboration was announced between the two organizations and The Bloody Point Golf Club & Resort – Daufuskie Island.    Savannah’s new private charter yacht service celebrated with an enthusiastic group of invited guests.

The Whitman Yacht is the latest venture for The Whitman Hospitality Group which established its brand of tailored accommodations and events at its flagship mansion at 611 Whitaker Street.  The Whitman now offers personalized sailing experiences on its new private yacht which is available for private charter. From its polished woodwork to its colorful spinnaker, this custom 47’ ketch-rigged sailing vessel beckons invitingly to guests, providing unique views of Savannah’s historic waterfront and other breathtaking sites, including saltwater marshes, a complex network of waterways, wildlife and protected natural barrier islands.

Beginning this week The Whitman Yacht will be moored at The Westin Savannah Harbor’s deep harbor during the days before the resort’s First Fridays to give guests a taste of the options available to them; ranging from relaxed sunset cocktail cruises to a full day of hands on sailing and tuition under the expert guidance of Captain Bennett Bacon.    In addition, The Whitman Yacht will be working with The Westin Beach Club’s Daufuskie Island team to offer a range of tailored charter options starting from the island’s Bloody Point dock.

Owner Steve Buckner, who boasts a 50-year long passion for sailing has taken on this new venture to share his love of hospitality and sailing.   Buckner said “The Whitman has always provided its guests with the best accommodations, amenities and treatment available. Now, the historic Victorian mansion is taking its luxurious signature services to the waterways of Savannah and beyond and we are thrilled to be partnering with the team at the Westin to enhance their guests’ experiences”.

Mark Spadoni, General Manager of the Westin Savannah Harbor commented “Our partnership with the Whitman is a natural progression for us to offer first class memorable experiences for our guests in addition to our Beach Club. The Savannah area has a rich history tied directly to its maritime roots as a strategic port town.  For guests from around the world to experience our local water ways on a luxury vessel, this is a great new offering”.

Kevin McCarthy, Owner of The Bloody Point Golf Club & Resort – Daufuskie Island said “We feel honored to be a continued strategic partner at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa and we look forward to expanding our collaboration to include The Whitman Hospitality Group.  Daufuskie Island is a natural connection for the Whitman Yacht and its sailing experiences.”

Buckner has appointed Captain Bennett Bacon, who grew up on Tybee Island and in neighboring Macintosh County to run the day to day operations of the private charter service. An internationally-accredited surf coach and seafarer, Bacon has worked for the past several years as a captain and professional naturalist running guided fishing charters, eco tours, fossil hunts and sharing his knowledge of Georgia’s coastal ecosystems.  He spends every spare minute sailing his own classic small yacht.

Buckner and Bacon are thrilled to treat their onboard visitors to an impressive array of sights, sounds and delightful experiences. Those who charter the classically-styled vessel may choose to cruise up Savannah’s historic waterfront for a view of River Street and Fort Jackson; navigate low country tidal waterways and saltwater marshes which are teeming with wildlife; or spend a full day venturing offshore where guests can fully engage in the exhilarating sailing experience or simply relax and enjoy the ride.

“We’re ready to provide The Whitman Yacht guests with experiences that include brushes with dolphins, sea turtles, bald eagles, pelicans, breathtaking views of Georgia’s unspoiled coastline, interesting information and more,” Bacon said. “Every day of sailing is different but our guests can be sure of a consistently high quality experience aboard The Whitman Yacht, just as they do at The Whitman Mansion”.

The yacht is available for private charter by the half day, day, week or longer and is ideal for two to six guests. Prices begin at an affordable $750 for a half day for up to six guests.  Catering packages are available ranging from simple refreshments to a full sunset dinner sail.

Priority booking privileges are offered to Whitman and Westin guests.  Savannah residents, businesses and visitors can also inquire about availability of the Whitman Yacht for team building, family occasions or simply time on the water with friends.
